Transcript for Episode 62
Hey there! This is Nurse Nicole, founder of Your Nursing Tutor. Today I’m sharing another Tutoring Consult with one of my VIP Tutoring Members, Gabby. When Gabby first signed up, she shared the story of her nursing journey with me, and I’m going to briefly tell you about it because I know it will resonate with a lot of you listening. Prior to starting her core nursing classes, Gabby had a pretty impressive pre-nursing resume. She had done very well in her classes, held some leadership roles, and pretty much was considered a model student. However, all that unexpectedly changed as she moved forward on her nursing journey. Despite her previous academic successes, she received a D in her first core nursing class. It was a shock to say the least, and she began to experience a new level of test anxiety that she didn’t even know existed. Despite studying so hard, having no life, and doing everything she was told to do by her instructors, she was still not prepared and only barely scraped by when she took that same class for the second time. And then COVID hit, and her next semester of classes moved exclusively online. Not surprisingly, it was a disastrous experience and she ended up failing her second nursing class. Her nursing journey wasn’t going as expected, she ended up having to repeat some classes and take others out of order as a result. She felt like she was drowning, and just totally LOST about what to do about it. After a very stress-filled, no-life semester, Gabby managed to pass 2 of her nursing classes…but unfortunately failed the other 2. She was automatically dismissed from the nursing program, but followed her school’s appeals process and petitioned for another chance. They granted it, along with some additional requirements of meeting regularly with her advisor, the course coordinators, and the academic success coordinator. Along with these extra meetings came extra stress and extra pressure…and she again failed a nursing class. Unexpectedly, her nursing program again approved her petition to try again, which is almost unheard of that a nursing school would give that many chances, but I think it really shows how much Gabby’s school DOES care about her and her success, and wants the best for her. And also that they see the same things in Gabby that I see…a dedicated, hardworking student who is willing to do whatever it takes to reach her dream of becoming a nurse. But Gabby also realized at this point that she wasn’t getting the help and direction she truly needed to start making the important connections required for her to succeed…and that if she didn’t do something drastically different this semester, then her story was going to keep repeating itself. That’s when she found Your Nursing Tutor, and the VIP Tutoring Membership. And I want to thank Gabby for being willing to share her Tutoring Consult that we do so that other nursing students in a similar situation can know that number 1, you are NOT alone in your experience, and number 2, there is help available that is DIFFERENT, and more effective, than what you’ve been told over and over to do so far. During this tutoring consult with Gabby, we talked about what it’s like when you feel intimidated by your instructor to the point where you aren’t comfortable asking the questions you really need to ask. We also discussed one of the BIGGEST nursing school myths that even your professors believe, and what the truth behind it is. Spoiler alert…this myth is the same reason that they keep telling you to do the same things over and over again when you’re studying, even when they obviously haven’t been working. And finally, we talked about Gabby’s frustrating experience being told that she needed to learn to “think like a nurse”…but then not being given any guidance or instructions for HOW to start doing that. Are you good? How are you doing? Well, a little tired today. But other than that, and I catch you up late last night, too. So thank you again for that. That was great. Yeah, good. I’m glad. So tell me a little bit about what you like, what is what can I do in this 30 minute session to, like, really get you off? On a good start. It feels success feeling successful after we meet.
Gabby Okay, um, so I guess I’ll just like kind of start off with like, explaining some things about myself. And then, like, some questions I have for you, and then we can kind of go okay, perfect. Um, so I guess nursing school has just been like, so difficult for me a lot of
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, I was gonna say I read what you wrote on the thing. You had quite the journey. Yeah.
Gabby So I guess. Now I’d like when you you know, I’m sure you’re aware, when you don’t pass nursing classes, you’re supposed to be dismissed from level. So I’ve technically been dismissed and readmitted twice now.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, that’s, they must see something in here. That is good, because that doesn’t happen very often. So that’s pretty awesome. I
Gabby do feel very fortunate that I am blessed enough. I’ve even met with the dean. So I do feel blessed in the sense that they do have my best interest. And they do want me to. So they do want me there. And having my head does make me feel better. But I guess since per my written mission statement, I’m supposed to be meeting with people like the Academic Success advisor at school monthly, my advisor, the course coordinators, and I guess that stresses me out a lot because it’s very time consuming. So I feel like I want to be able to tell them like I have a tutor or like, school that I am trying. I have met with like the campus Assistance Program, and I am in therapy now. So there’s changes I’ve made, but I think I would feel more comfortable if I just had someone like you or you feel feel like I just have you in my back pocket and I should offer like a monthly
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, the tutoring call program.
Gabby Yes. I am. Very interested in that as well. Yeah. Because like yeah, I feel like even when Marilla says, I’m so stressed with all these meetings, and I just want to feel like I’m telling them like, I have someone now. And then I want to feel like I have you to answer my questions, because I feel like I also have this anxiety built up with my faculty like, Absolutely. She intimidates me so much, I don’t like to ask questions. I don’t even really participate, because now this is my third time. And so I feel like just having you and having a new face a new like personality. And I feel like our personalities are really aligned or like, so I’m noticed. Whereas with my med search teachers and faculty at school, I don’t feel the same sense of comfort that you give me and like motivation. So although meaning with them is helpful, I feel like I need more.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah. Oh, absolutely. And what I find happens a lot of times in nursing schools is that even if your professor is not intimidating, you know, like, even, they are expert nurses. And there’s this problem that happens, that’s well researched. That’s the expert, the novice problem is what I call it is that once you become an expert in something, it’s really hard to think back to what it was like when you used to be a beginner, which is what you are. And so because of that you make these assumptions. There’s actually this children’s book that I saw about this, that just illustrates it really well, where there’s like a fish in a tadpole, that are friends in the pond. And I love analogies, by the way, so good. So and the fish really wants to see what the world is like. But of course, can’t leave the pond. So the tadpole says when he grows up into a fall frog, he’ll go out, see the world and come back and tell the fish all about it. So that’s what happens one day, the frog comes back and starts telling the fish about people, you know, who walk on two legs. And so of course, the frog is describing what he has seen. But the fish and then this is what’s so cool about the children’s book is that the illustrations are from the fish’s point of view, and what the fish is imagining. And so the fish has never seen a person so the fish is imagining a fish standing up right, on two little fins. And the frog, of course, has absolutely no idea because he is an expert now on the world of people, I he has a completely different frame of reference than the fish. And if the frog doesn’t ask the right questions, you know, he’s never gonna know that the fish is totally in left field, and the fish is just gonna be like, oh, yeah, I’m following you. I got it. I knew exactly what’s going on. Nicole? Yes, yeah. And then and then you get to the test. And the frog finds out that oh, wait, a fish is not on the same page. Right? Yeah. And, and you don’t know why. And, and this happens a lot. And, and unfortunately, sometimes it can lead to the professors thinking that there’s something wrong with you, as a students, you know, because they don’t know what else it could be. Because they explained it to you. You said you got it. You just couldn’t do well, on the test. You must need better test taking strategy. Yeah, the problem is not testing strategy. That’s like the biggest myth in nursing school.
Gabby And so happy I found you already.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, I think so. Yes. And so that’s where I come in is because I specialize in making that transition from beginner to expert. And, yeah, because, yeah, going,
Gabby I just have brought up a question in mind. Yeah, go ahead, ask it. Um, I was that reminded me that the same mentor professor that I’ve been meeting with for over three semesters now, she always tells me to go over practice questions. And every time I don’t do well, on a test, she’s like, You must not have done that. Or, like, Did you do the practice questions? And I’m like, I do practice questions till I’m blue in the face. But it’s just that there’s so much anxiety while doing those practice questions, because I’m like, What am I reading? What I mean, what can I take away from this? It’s Chinese.
Nicole Whitworth It is, yeah, it’s a whole nother language that you’re learning. And you’re being told that just start reading in this language. But the problem with that is to use another analogy, that if you were going to learn Chinese, would you start by reading a textbook? Right? Yeah, no. How would you start learning Chinese?
Gabby You would start by the vocabulary start by even Yeah, even
Nicole Whitworth before that, you’d start by learning what their characters are, right? Like how do we put together words in Chinese and like, you know, to be able to read and get meaning. And then you put that together and you learn the words in the vocabulary and then you do sentences and then you move on to paragraphs and then you no longer
Gabby are saying that. When I was watching some of your I was online like looking like how to think like a nurse and that’s actually how I found you. And so then I started watching your videos and I’m like, Oh my gosh, like, where do I sign up? And I did notice you said that. It’s like nursing school is like learning a new language. And you have to learn the alphabet first. And I joined the silver bullet system. I’m noticing, I am skipping some of that fundamental things that you talked about that we need that foundation to build upon, and I am completely lacking that foundation. And I don’t know if it’s because my nursing courses are out of order, because of like, my unique situation with retaking classes, because I took like physiology and health assessment, then went on to like, an All my stuff’s out of order. I took foundations out of place, had a semester off, then went into med search.
Nicole Whitworth Okay, yeah, I’ve had gaps there. Yeah, yeah. And that can be it. But honestly, this sort of thing happens. Like this is the most common problem I see. In nursing school, nursing students what we see. So even when you do take it in order, a lot of times what happens is, you know, exactly what we’ve been talking about. And even before you get to the point of failing a class, if you’re going to your professor and saying I’m doing all the things I’m I still failed the test, what do I do? They said, Well, did you you didn’t do enough practice questions, do more practice questions. And so yeah, but the answer is not to do more of the same. Like, everybody’s heard that phrase, what’s the definition of crazy, you keep doing the same thing and expect a different result? Yes. Professors, because they have this expert to novice they care, they really do. Like I never ever want to slam professors. Because they honestly feel just as frustrated as you do, which is why I want to get this message out to nursing schools everywhere, about how you need to approach the way you think you have to think as an expert nurse, you have to think more like a student. And that takes practice, it takes a lot of what we call metacognition, which is thinking about how you think, which is a very difficult thing to do. And even when you do it, well, you’re still gonna have gaps. So it also requires a big dose of humility. And like realizing that I’m not going to be able to even as a tutor has a lot of experience working with this problem. Sometimes I’m going to explain something, and I’m going to miss something. And so I have to be really aware of the questions you’re asking, and kind of read between the lines, because you don’t always know what question to ask, because you’re a beginner. And so I have to listen to the question you’re asking and then take that question. And then based on my experience with all the other tutoring students I’ve worked with, and the other nursing students over the years, and how I know about my metacognition and how nurses think, I have to say, Okay, what’s the question you need to be asking? And that’s the one I need to answer for you to help you move forward with your understanding. And even more importantly than that, that’s what I need to teach you how to do for yourself. Because that’s basically what it means to be thinking like a nurse,
Gabby a novice nurse, right? That’s right. That’s what made me start looking up how to think like a nurse, because it’s like, how to go from a novice nurse and advanced nurse. Well, you have to think like a nurse. Well, how do you think like, oh,
Nicole Whitworth yeah, and that’s why I developed the silver bullet study system, because what I hear all the time is just, you know, nurses and professors saying, you just got to think like a nurse. Yes. But then that’s where they stop. And the next piece of advice is, you know, things like, do more practice questions. In your textbook, make sure you read read the chapters, focus on the headings, yeah, focus on the headings, focus on the charts. And the tables be like, Okay, well, what do I do with that overwhelming amount of information, you know, focus on the most important information, how do I pick the most important information? You know, it becomes a catch 22? Because you can’t, you need to be able to think like a nurse in order to know what would be important to a nurse. But you have to know what the important information is before you can think like a nurse. And so that’s where I come in. I’m like, I want to be the training wheels for you to take off and be able to do it. Yeah. And that’s really what the silver bullet study system is. It’s that it’s another form of training wheels to guide you through the four steps. And like you gave me the silver bullet study system outline that you did last week, and you did a great job like that. So yeah, that’s one of the best ones I’ve seen as a first attempt. Okay.
Gabby Yeah, let me let me Yeah, cuz usually, a
Nicole Whitworth lot of times what I see that some of the common mistakes that get made is, you know, people copy right out of the textbook. They don’t put it in their own their own words. Yeah, and they write way too much. Okay, they, yeah, and those are the two things but that the two biggest mistakes See, but you did a really great job of putting things in your own words like rephrasing it. You were kind of I noticed you were kind of grouping information and looking for those patterns. It seems like, yeah. Which is awesome. Thank you. And yeah, and you were like I said, You were definitely putting it in your own words, you did not write too much. Which means, which tells me that I think, I don’t know. How did you feel about in terms of Did you feel like you were pulling out the most important information?
Gabby Yes, I did. I was gonna ask you, though I have not done as many practice questions as I feel like I should have up until this point. But I feel like the silver bullet study system helps a lot. How, in your experience, do students usually transition from like doing a silver bullet to doing practice questions? If they usually do this? They excel typically? Yeah. So
Nicole Whitworth that’s a good question. So it’s not an either or, okay, it’s not we do the silver bullet study system, or we do practice questions. Because remember, the silver bullet study system is it’s a tool, and it’s a framework. So writing it out in outline form is one way to apply the silver bullet study system. Because remember, as we’re being guided through the silver bullet study system, it’s the you know, it’s helping us identify the most important information, especially in steps one and two, what we need to memorize what we need to understand building that foundational layer. And then steps three and four, we’re kind of changing our focus and our skill to practicing how to analyze and apply. And that’s that higher level thinking. And as we do that, that’s another way to be practice pulling out the most important information, what are the most important symptoms? So like, last night at the tutoring session, one of the last questions we get got, you know, that read from our forum, was about the difference between atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. So remember, what we said about that is they sound very similar, it can be overwhelming when you’re just like looking at the textbook and, you know, two pages of information. But what you do is you wrestle with a little bit, you say, Okay, well, this is going on with atrial flutter, and this is going on with atrial fibrillation, what’s going to be different between the two? Okay, you know, and now all of a sudden, it becomes much more clear. Yeah. And you can really cut through that two pages of information. And you can identify the differences between the two. And you can see how they would have all these similarities, but the similarities aren’t going to help you to differentiate them on the test. So, so they’re both important to know. Oh, yeah, it’s important to know, but you need to have a tool for how to divide and conquer. Yeah. And yeah,
Gabby well, they since doing the silver bullet study says that our system, even in class yesterday, we were doing muscular skeletal. And I was even like the case studies that we’re presenting, I kind of was thinking about, like the step one, the step two, and if you’re right, I was picking it out. And I was like, okay, I can see what you mean that it does get easier and like, you start picking it up quicker. And so that’s exciting and very motivating to because you get like, a little like dopamine kick. Yes. On it again.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, and it doesn’t take very long to make this turnaround, did it because you’ve only been working on a silver bullet study system. Yeah, like less than two weeks?
Gabby A week? Yeah. Last one. Yeah.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, so it’s, it hasn’t even been, or it’s been one week one, and you’re already starting to see how you’re understanding the information better how you’re able to get through the reading a little bit faster. Or you will be able to as you get more practice that this without having to read word for word, which textbooks are never intended to be read word for word, like a novel, I should say. Very, they’re intended as a reference. And so the silver bullets, it says helps you do that. So now I wouldn’t say like, don’t, don’t completely stop doing, you know, practice questions. It doesn’t sound like you have, but what you want to do is you want to when you do the practice questions, you want to be doing exactly what you just described, you’re doing in lecture, right? You want to be thinking through the steps of the silver bullet study system. Okay. So they give you a scenario. And what you do first, as you think, is you start activating, I call them like little information nodes in your head. Okay, this is your internal concept map that you’ve been building. Yes. And we’re using the silver bullet study system. And so and, and here’s the thing, you have a lot of this information she has, the problem is they haven’t been connected to each other before. Now. That’s the that’s the part of the studying that you’ve been missing, largely. Okay. And so and that’s why a lot of times students can see you know, some quick wins. Yeah, because you have a lot you study so hard, you really do. You know, you do and so it’s in there, a lot of it. Now you do have some gaps, probably like you also identified that you have to go back but this process helps you identify those that you can easily fill them in as you go without feeling like you’re so far behind. You’re never going to catch up. Right. So, so as you read the question, you’re going to think, what? What kind of information? Does this remind me of? Like, what do I think I need to know? In order to? You know, and we’re so we’re looking for the connectors, what’s the connector information that they may not be directly telling us, but they’re expecting me to know, in order to answer this, okay. Yeah, yes, the principal. See, you were definitely paying attention last night.
Gabby Yes. Excited. I found you.
Nicole Whitworth Yes, they what are the principles that they’re, like testing us on? And then from there, then you look, and you’re and you’re basically so you’re taking the information they gave you and your act, you’re using that to kind of activate a few things that you already know, you might not use all of that information, okay. But, but it might remind you of something else that, oh, I didn’t need to know that. But I need to know this. Ah, okay. And so it takes you down this pathway. Okay. And then once you’ve started activating this information, it’s gonna help with your anxiety too. Because even if you read a question, like your test anxiety, because even when you read a question, sometimes you read it, and you’re like, I didn’t study that. Yeah. And then you freeze. But the truth is, is that you, you are always going to get a question that you didn’t study specifically that, okay. Because NCLEX potential, literally,
Gabby that will happen. I’m like, okay, made me feel better. But then you did explain how once you have that knowledge, and we’re asking the proper questions and getting these principles and pulling them out and organizing it, then it’s not as scary because it’s like, wait, I do know something. And now I do know how to think about it.
Nicole Whitworth Exactly. Yes, exactly. Yes. So one, it’s okay, it’s giving yourself permission to get some wrong sometimes. Because even as an experienced tutor, sometimes I get some wrong. Okay. NCLEX questions are hard. They’re hard. Okay. And sometimes, they’re badly written, that’s another component, like I always tell students, is that now the actual NCLEX those questions are all well written, because they do extensive testing, right? Yeah. Right. Right. But your, your professor, your instructor doesn’t have that large of a data file. So occasionally, there’s just gonna be a bad question. You just got to live with it, okay, and not beat yourself up over it just be like, it’s okay. You know, because I have a life, and I’m still, you know, going to be a good nurse someday. So there’s that component of like, the mental mind game that, you know, I can help you with. And then there’s, but then there’s also that, if you can keep your anxiety in check your test anxiety and check, keep it under control and be like, Oh, I didn’t study this specific thing. So let me think about what I do know, related to this topic. Okay. And, and once you start activating those information, nodes in your head of related information, then all of a sudden, the puzzle pieces kind of click into place. And this is the experience that when your instructor says, Oh, just keep doing practice questions, it’ll eventually click. Okay. It’s not magic. It’s not magic. It does do that for some students, like some students accidentally stumble into thinking this way. Right? Maybe they’re naturally wired to think this way. Maybe they had another related experience. Maybe it’s just luck, right? And so, so that does happen for some students. Right. And so instructors see that some people get through this. Exactly. And so some instructors will see that, and they’ll be like, well, it clicked for that students. So it’s like, that must be for everybody. But there are things that you can be like intentionally doing to make it click faster. Right. And it wouldn’t be fair, for like, I’m not saying the instructors are doing this to make it harder on purpose. They don’t know the thing to be doing. So they’re making their best guess I don’t know, do more practice questions. Yeah. But that doesn’t help. If you’re approaching the practice question in a way that is not going to help it click. Because then you’re just it’s just busy work. Yeah, you’re just wasting your time. And stressing yourself out and making the mental game of nursing school a lot harder for yourself. Yeah, so but if you’re approaching them in a way that is strategically focused, like thinking about it using the silver bullet study system, and I’ll tell you that when you’re doing questions, you’ll start to see patterns with the silver bullet study system as you’re categorizing the information in your mind, because a lot of times what will happen is, you know, They will give you some symptoms, you know, and maybe tell you what, what the person, you know. So you can kind of say, well, based on these symptoms this person likely has, and you have to fill in the blank, they don’t give you step two information about what the pathophysiology is. Right? But what they want for an answer is going to be maybe some patient teaching, which of the following statements would be accurate to tell the patient that’s, you know, the basis of what’s going on or something? And so the answer would be something from step one, which is going to be well, you know, your kidneys normally do this. Yeah, right. And so, so they give you information from step three. And they ask in the answer for information from step one, okay, but if you don’t have that step two, you got to pull Step Two out of your brain, yes, to connect them. In order to get from Step three, backing up to step one. That makes sense. Okay, yeah. So that’s the thing you’re looking for most often in test questions is, what information are they giving me? What information are they asking for? What information? Do I have to pull up my brain to connect the two? Okay, that’s what you try to do.
Gabby Like I said, when I was doing this whole road sign system, I was noticing where I was like, step one, and two lacking is easier to see. I guess, since I did notice that now I go back and do it, you know, and think about it when I’m answering those questions.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, yeah. So. So yeah, so I think you are on a great path. You know, you’re working on the test anxiety using the test anxiety trading, and you should be the rubber band on your wrist. That’s nice. So that’s good. Yes, you’re doing a great job with utilizing the silver bullet study system method as you’re studying and thinking about it, utilizing what you already know. And identifying gaps so that you can fill them back in in a way that’s not going to be overwhelming. And you’re, you’re gonna be moving forward practicing how to apply that to the practice questions as you are going. And then as you do that, that’s going to be like a good exercise in for your tests, too. Right? Yeah. So and Tuesday are this. Okay, awesome. So, so yeah, and then and then you just see how it goes. And then after your test on Tuesday, I mean, obviously ask any questions between now and then in the forum and things like that, but, but when you get to the test, you know, see how it goes and then check back in and then we can reevaluate and see how the progress is see how it felt. See what you’re thinking of for that, too. Okay. Sounds good. Yeah. And then, let me do let me tell you a little more about tutor on call too, because I know Yes. Thank you. Yes, absolutely. So tutoring call is my you know, optional. Next step membership above the VIP tutoring membership. So I think you know what the tutoring, the VIP tutoring membership involves, it has the live group tutoring sessions, the the forum where you can ask questions outside of the live group tutoring sessions, and the training materials that are all in the members area of the website. So what the tutor on call option does is it gives you like a little more access to me to ask, like the personal questions, kind of with voice or text. So we use a free app called boxer, you can download on your phone, you can access it on any web browser, and you can just, anytime you have a question, you can just go ahead and send me a voice message and ask me the question and, you know, on your schedule whenever you want, and then you know when I’m available. I’ll get back to you priority. Yeah, and so then that’s just a separate monthly, like add on membership to the VIP degree membership.
Gabby Perfect. Okay. Um, and like, do you just send a link out to sign up for it? Or?
Nicole Whitworth Yep, I yeah, I can send you that link after we get off this meeting. Appreciate Yeah, my pleasure. So yeah. So do you have any other last minute questions before we finish up?
Gabby I think so. I think I’ve covered everything I wanted to ask you. But thank you so much, Nicole.
Nicole Whitworth Yeah, it’s my pleasure. I’m super excited to see the hope that you’re having now. Yeah, yeah. And I’m excited to work with you and just watch you blossom through this. So
Gabby thank you so much. That means so much to me. And like I said, I really appreciate your encouragement. Helps me.
Nicole Whitworth Absolutely. Yeah. You deserve it. So
Gabby be in touch.
Nicole Whitworth Yep. And I will email you that link in just a few minutes. Sorry. Okay. Take care guys.
